The Nasu Volcanic Group is located in northeastern Honshu, about 160 km north of Tokyo. It conslsts. from north to south, of five composite volcanoes: Kasshiasahidake, Sanbon-yaridake, Asahidake, Chausudake, and Minamigassan. Chausudake Volcano is the only active volcano having historical eruption records and active fumaroles. According to a document written in the 15th century, 180 people were killed by the 1410 eruption. The last minor eruption occurred in 1963. Recently, this field has been highly developed as a sightseeing spot; there are many spa resorts and cottages around the volcano. Furthermore, many people ascend to the summit of Chausudake Volcano using a cableway, except for the winter season, when conditions are hazardous.
