Hokkaido is the northern most district,
and the most recently developed part of Japan. This frontier island
is prosperous for natural resources, but vulnerable to natural
hazards. The Hokkaido Branch of the Geological Survey of Japan,
established in 1948, have been conducting surveys and researches
for quadrangle geologic maps (1:50,000 to 1:20,000 scales), mineral
resources (metal and non-metals), and energy resources (coal,
petroleum and geothermal). Studies for local, regional and global
environments (ground pollution, volcanic hazards, earthquakes
and climate changes) are another challenges of the Branch.
